2 PETER: DO NOT FORGET

Some people have a ‘bucket list’, a list of things they want to do before they ‘kick the bucket’. If you were about to die, what would you want to do? This is what Peter does – he writes a letter.

I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. (2 Pet 1:12-15, NIV)

Peter writes to the same group of Christians in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) that he wrote his first letter to (listen to the 1 Peter sermon series here). This time he doesn’t write to help them endure suffering. He writes to help them remember the truth. Except it’s so much more than ‘remembering’. It’s more like Peter, now an old man, grabs these Christians by the shoulders, looks them straight in the eyes, and with nostrils flaring and spittle flying from his mouth urges them “DO NOT FORGET!
